Past Project Sunday, Sonic Screwdriver

In order to populate my blog I'll be posting an old project every Sunday until I run out of easily accessible paintings and drawings from the past.

So this is my drawing of a sonic screwdriver. For Doctor Who fans it is the Tenth Doctor's screwdriver specifically. I was introduced to Doctor Who with the new series and David Tennant will always be my favourite.

It's a very large drawing, you can see it being held at chest height by a friend in this image, I'd estimate it at over 4 ft long.

And here are a couple of detail shots.

 I'm incredibly fond of this drawing. My problem is I just don't know how to frame or hang it! I don't want it to smudge but I can't afford to frame something so large behind glass. So far I'm toying with the idea of hanging with clear plastic in front, but it isn't a fleshed out solution yet.

Past Project Sunday, Telephone Wires

This is a painting I did of telephone wires on a cloudy day.

 The painting is only a few inches high on a large canvas, and was painted with the smallest brushes I owned along with toothpicks and even a single brush bristle. It was a lot of fun to do.

Past Project Sunday, Pokemon Paintings

If you can't guess, I adore Pokemon. This is a series of paintings that I do whenever I have the time. Eventually I'll paint all 151 original Pokemon, and try to find the wall space for them. I've also done commissions of these but they don't go into my personal set.

A Bouquet of Roses

This work is a bouquet of roses held in place by hand with my nails done by myself in order to complement them, or at least that is what I want it to seem like when you first look at it. On closer inspection, I want the viewer to notice that one of the roses looks a little different, and to suddenly see that indeed, one of the roses is painted on my hand, which is painted black everywhere else to blend with the black fabric of the background. 

I enjoyed experimenting with impermanence of working on something I knew I would be washing away once it was complete, and working on a surface that is so different from a canvas. I originally attempted to paint the rose as closely to the original as I could, but while doing that I considered what was being added by duplicating what was already there so closely, and why my painting was better than leaving the rose on the stem would be. When I couldn’t answer this question, I started again and painted the rose in a more painterly style, making it more stylized and tipping the painted rose in white and fading to a deeper red rather than working with just the colours of the original. 

The play between the real, or natural and the painted artificial is another aspect I wanted to contrast, experiencing first one and then the other.
